Amendment 1 in North Carolina

I might be a little slow on the news because I just heard about this yesterday. I saw it on Twitter, which is random because I never use Twitter. I follow the HRC and saw someone mention the law. I quickly did a Google search and found this article. Whoa.

The amendment simply says “Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.” The people will vote on Amendment 1 on May 8th.

But, back to the article I found: first of all, I can’t even tell you how disgusting it is that this women wants to further the “Caucasian race.” Honey, wake up and smell the racism. Someone once had a similar thought and his name was Hitler. It’s frightening to think that her thoughts could be shared by enough people in the state of North Carolina to get this law passed. It frightens me even further to think about Caucasians like her reproducing and begetting more bigots. Why don’t you sit back and let someone else have a turn and see how much better the world can be?

Secondly, this world is overpopulated. I don’t know how she missed that memo. Procreation arguments are so old-fashioned and over-sighted. We have too many people. We are killing our planet. Millions of people already on the planet are starving. The last thing we need is some mentality to convince people to have more children (don’t even get me started on birth control rights. And I don’t even need them, I’m gay!)

In some ways, I’m thankful this woman exists. People who are against gay marriage but aren’t sure why might see an argument like this one and think twice. Why must we always think we are better than someone else? Why does one group deserve more rights than others? Who are we to judge and say that one type is better than another?

We are not. We breath. We live. We die.

And all of us hope for happiness and joy. We hope to feel loved, be loved, give love. Why would we take love away from anyone? Why would we see anyone’s love as less-than, second class, less deserving?

This bill will not bring happiness and equality to the state of North Carolina. This bill only hopes to stifle and oppress and shame and injure those of the LGBTQ community.

Speaking of oppression, have you heard of Missouri’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill? Clearly the lawmakers in Missouri hasn’t read this article about what can happen to children when you repress and ignore the existence of bullying and homosexuality. When adults to pretend like homosexuality doesn’t exist, they are subliminally telling the children that it’s wrong. It should not be talked about. It should be hidden away. You, as a young gay child, should be hidden away. You must repress yourself as society will ultimately repress you anyways.

I suppose we should be happy that people are talking about Gay Rights so much. If we don’t talk about it, nothing will change. But how demoralizing is it to see these laws? The LGBTQ community is in the middle of a political battle, being toss around from side to side. I may be completely comfortable with who I am but what about the thousands who aren’t? The next time one of these Republicans makes a speech, I’d love for them to imagine their son or daughter as the gay person in question and then try to say the things you were going to say. Try to make your points about a lesser person. Try to imagine your own flesh and blood as this “other” you so willing put down and shame.

Hopefully all this means that change is coming. Good change, which is neither of these bills. Hatred is so easy. It’s easy to hate what you don’t know or don’t respect. Loving is hard. Loving someone you want to hate is one of the hardest things you can do but it’s also the most admirable. Do yourself a favor and try to love someone new today. The world might be a better place because of it…
